More market bargain hunting in Arapuni

- LUKE KIRKEBY

News of a painting bought for $5 at the Arapuni Market and later valued at around $1200 will no doubt spark the interest of bargain hunters this time around.

The next Arapuni Market takes place on Sunday, October 29 at the Arapuni Hall and organiser and glass painter Jan Hardy said there’s sure to be a few more lucky finds.

‘‘I can’t remember the name of the artist but they were a well-known New Zealand artist and the man who bought it clearly had a good eye and recognised their signature,’’ she said.

‘‘He only paid $5 for the painting but it turned out to be worth between $800 to $1200 so good on him.’’

Hardy said there will be a variety of stalls on offer as well as a car boot sale and a Teddy Bears’ Picnic so that kids can be entertained as well.

‘‘There will just be a real variety. We have 60 booked in which includes everything from car boot, hand made crafts and jewellery, recycled old stuff, China bird whistles, fruit, herbal products, soaps, plants, power tools, and someone’s even selling old cameras which is a bit different,’’ she said.

‘‘There really will be something for everyone.’’

She said stall holders travel from throughout the North Island to take part.

‘‘It’s only a small hall so there will only be eight stall holders inside and the rest will be outside around it as well as on the football field,’’ she said.

‘‘We seem to be getting four seasons in one day at the moment too so Mercury have given us a big gazebo for the stalls outside.’’

Hardy said there will also be a couple of fundraising projects taking place.

‘‘One group is raising funds for a little girl called Bonnie Turpin who has cerebral palsy,’’ she said.

‘‘She can’t walk and needs to travel to America for an operation that will allow her to walk so there will be a stall to help raise funds.’’

‘‘There will also be a wedding fundraiser,’’ she said.

Despite hours of work being put in to make the event possible Hardy said she was looking forward to it.

‘‘I’ll be glad when it’s all done but it does make me chuffed with all the hard work the other girls have been doing to get it ready,’’ she said.
