Books aplenty at Rotary Putaruru sale

- LUKE KIRKEBY

You’ll want to book a time for this year’s Rotary Putaruru Annual Book Sale.

Member Susan Provan, who has been busy setting the venue up in the old Unichem Pharmacy building in Princes St, said there will be well over 1000 books up for sale from November 22-25 between 10am and 4pm.

‘‘They are all from local people who throughout the year hand them in either to the pharmacy, Farmlands, or to me and I pick them up,’’ she said.

‘‘I have still got a garage full at home too. There are thousands, it is incredible.’’

Provan said people could donate books whenever they liked.

‘‘People come in right throughout the book sale and hand in boxes and then they go and buy different books,’’ she said.

‘‘I have been involved for six years now and it’s a bit of an institution in Putaruru. It’s great because it allows people to recycle their unwanted books for new ones.’’

She said all the money raised would be going back into the community.

‘‘Every year it goes towards different local projects. This year we don’t have a special project that we want to focus on but throughout the year we fund kids through the likes of leadership courses,’’ she said.

President Judith Bennett said one of the main things the money would go towards was illustrated dictionaries for local primary school children.

‘‘All Year 4 students in seven local primary schools will get dictionaries and because they are illustrated they are sort of like an encyclopaedia to the children. They are very informative,’’ she said.

‘‘Each child gets to take them home, it is their own book, it does not stay at school,’’ Provan added.

Bennett and Provan said the sale, which this year will also have eftpos, was a chance for people to get great books at bargain prices.

‘‘We do get the odd first edition and one signed by the author. Every year the mix is different,’’ Provan said.

‘‘This year we seem to have lots of biographies whereas last year we didn’t and we always gets loads of cookery, gardening and New Zealand picture books.’’

‘‘Everybody’s gem is different but you might find your gem here,’’ Bennett said.
