Time stands still for lovers

- By ILONA HANNE

It’s been a temporary story of woe for Juliet and her Romeo of Stratford’s glockenspiel recently, after vandals caused the couple’s love story to be put on hold.

Stratford residents were asking wherefore art their Romeo last week as he and Juliet took a short break from their performing duties in the town’s famous glockenspiel.

Stratford District Council communications officer Alicia Cameron says the glockenspiel was vandalised with the resultant damage creating technical issues which meant the play couldn’t go on until it was fixed.

The vandalism took place over the past few weeks which caused the clock to run slow. When council officers investigated the slow clock, they discovered the balcony doors had been partially blocked by vandals, with part of the workings of the glockenspiel being damaged as a result.

“Thanks to Geoff Grierson of Stratford Engineering completing temporary repairs last week the clock is now telling the correct time and Romeo and Juliet are performing on schedule.”

The actual cost of the vandalism is unknown as council waits to receive quotes to replace the broken part.
