Rmike.alexander@fairfaxmedia.co.nz is an ancient form of communication that can brings us into this neutral place without effort – it provides us with a kind of physical frequency massage. Music offers us a way to disconnect from our out-of-control busy minds, something that is often one of our biggest challenges with healing completely. Using different relaxing music will definitely have a positive effect on any healing you’re after from my experience.
You are a bit of a nomad. Is New Zealand still home?
Yes, New Zealand is definitely home; I’m just on a world tour at the moment. New Zealand is like my green house home. It’s where I let everything brew and create without disturbance, my favourite part of New Zealand.
What has been the most satisfying live experience for you?
Tough to pick.. I think playing on national live TV in Switzerland in the KKL Hall with my former group, White Flag Project – an Israeli-Palestinian band. It was just one big magic moment of music making with no boarders Just music.
Do you have a personal philosophy on life?
I’m doing my best to keep developing and evolving myself and my philosophies, I’m just trying to keep things as simple as possible and understand that nothing is perfect. True success for me is 100 per cent happiness and inner peace.
I gather you have done a collaboration with Don McGlashan for World of Wearable Arts. What is the background to that?
Don was looking for a meditative piece with an oriental flavour and he found my music, so together with my label Marigold Records, we put a piece together for one of the segments of the show. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt from this collaboration was simplicity. When I handed in my draft of the composition I just had a few of my ambient guitar layers on the page, together with a simple melody line. It ended up being the final version after he said he didn’t want anything more complicated than that – a big lesson of simplicity.
What is the movie you are scoring and/or the book you are writing music for or is that top secret?
That’s under wraps for now, but I’ll be able to share more with you soon!
