Man stabbed after vicious birthday party brawl

-

A 21st birthday where one man was stabbed started sounding ‘‘aggressive and angry’’ as people moved out onto the street, a neighbour says.

The man was critically injured after he was stabbed six times when the party in Lower Hutt’s Naenae descended into a street brawl, thought to have included about 50 people, yesterday morning.

A 20-year-old man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in relation to the stabbing. He was due to appear in the Hutt Valley District Court yesterday.

A resident on the street, who did not want to be named, said the gathering sounded like a typical party earlier in the night, but early yesterday morning the mood changed and she heard banging, screaming, swearing, and dogs barking.

‘‘When it moved onto the street it sounded aggressive and angry ... it was awful.’’

She said it took an hour or so for the party to be broken up.

Police were called to the street fight on Waddington Dr just before 2.30am. Emergency service workers were put in danger when the partygoers pelted an ambulance with bottles, police said.

The stabbing victim was taken to Wellington Hospital and was in a serious condition in intensive care.

Eight arrests were made for disorder and obstruction offences.
