MY 5-year-old labrador called Max becomes anxious during thunder storms and is especially bad with fireworks. Do you have any advice to help us survive Guy Fawkes celebrations?

This is a common concern with both dogs and cats and needs a number of approaches. Make sure Max has a safe place inside to retreat to during fireworks or thunderstorms and plan to be home during fireworks season. Deaden the sound by drawing curtains and having a radio or TV on for background noise. Exercise early in the evening and give a small meal. Consider investing in a dog pheromone dispenser or spray which will help Max to relax. Contact your vet and get a prescription of Xanax which is a sedative type medication recommended to treat dogs for noise phobia. It works within one hour so can be given early in the evening. It may cause some sedation, but it also makes dogs more relaxed and better able to withstand the explosions. Long term consider behavioural desensitisation.

Tigger, our 4-year-old tortoiseshell cat keeps getting a sore on her neck in front of her shoulder blades. She sometimes scratches it so much it almost bleeds. What do you think is causing it?

An itchy area on the lower neck of cats is frequently seen by vets. Often on examination there are other skin sores about the neck, but your cat may be scratching more at just one area. First of all check flea control for Tigger and other pets in the house as a flea allergy can cause sores on the neck. Infections such as ringworm are not usually itchy but your vet will check for this and any evidence of mites. Sometimes a food or inhaled allergens can trigger this type of skin reaction.
