Ahoy there sailor! Sex venues ready for navies
AUCKLAND sex venues are preparing for a massive week as thousands of sailors descend on the city.
The sailors will be here for the Royal New Zealand Navy’s 75th anniversary celebrations, which kick off on Thursday in the Waitemata Harbour.
A Defence Force spokesperson said the event would include about 5000 sailors from as far afield as Canada, Germany, Samoa, Singapore, Australia, and the United States.
Their official duties include an International Naval Review and a march down Queen St, but all bets are off once the sun goes down.
Police have been visiting strip clubs and brothels across the central city, warning them they may need to bring in extra staff to deal with an increase in clientele.
The manager of Galaxy Club, an adult entertainment venue near the waterfront, said plans were under way to deal with demand. She asked not to be named.
‘‘There’s not even 5000 girls in Auckland,’’ she said. ‘‘We might have to call up Wellington to bring in some extra girls.’’
To cope with the influx of sailors, police will be out and about making sure the streets are safe during the naval celebrations.
‘‘Auckland City District Police has been working closely with the Navy and the Auckland Harbour Master to ensure it is a safe and successful event,’’ a police spokesperson said.
Rachael Shadbolt from Hospitality NZ said it would also be a great week for bars and restaurants.
‘‘If you’ve got people that have got shore leave that are looking to enjoy Kiwi hospitality, then we’d welcome them with open arms,’’ she said.
‘‘Just come in and enjoy.’’
