Monday, 8.30pm Sky Arts Directed by Kiwi Rebecca Tansley, this 2015 documentary details Italian-born Auckland pianist Flavio Villani’s build-up towards performing the Russian composer’s second piano concerto in his homeland. While an interest in classical music and musicians will certainly aid in your enjoyment of the film – it’s not essential, as Villani’s enthusiasm for the work and open nature shine through. Monday, 8.30PM Rialto Hirokazu Koreeda’s (I Wish, Like Father, Like Son) is a sumptuous looking, languidly paced, lovingly created and gentle drama that deceptively packs a powerful narrative punch. He again demonstrates his superb ability to draw the best out of a young cast, while also creating a real sense of place and space and observations on Japanese life both modern and ancient (you’ll learn hints on everything from Billionaire Boy Saturday, 7.30pm UKTV
Based on the best-selling book by David Walliams, this family comedy tells the story of Len and Joe Spud, an impoverished father and son who become instant billionaires when Len invents a new type of toilet roll. Home is now a huge mansion with a celebrity butler, but while 12-year-old Joe has everything money can buy, what he really needs is a friend. ‘‘Cheeky jokes about toilet paper, inedible school lunches and the selfishness and stupidity of grown-ups recalled Roald Dahl at his most gleefully subversive,’’ wrote The Telegraph‘ s Ed Power.
