X-Men’s Jackman and Stewart sign off in style

-

Logan (R16) Directed by James Mangold Starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Richard E Grant 137 mins IF Wolverine’s last, impressive solo outing in 2013 was a Samurai movie, then this fitting farewell is most assuredly a Western.

It’s no secret that Logan marks the departure of both old Wolvie himself, Hugh Jackman, and the original Professor Charles Xavier, Sir Patrick Stewart, and they sign off from almost two decades in the world of X-Men in some style here.

Set in a near future where mutants are essentially extinct, Logan sees our Adamantiumclawed one working as a chauffeur for hire, while taking care of the ailing and increasingly addled Professor in a remote location just south of the USMexico border.

However, as both men begin to feel that death may be their only release as their remaining powers begin to turn poisonous, into their orbit comes a young girl (Dafne Keen) in need of their help. She’s been pursued by authorities, government and sinister. But while Logan wants initially wants nothing to do with her, Charles believes she has more in common with them than first appears.

A film of extremes, Logan is both ultra-violent and heartwrenchingly elegiac. Cleverly incorporating its comic-book origins into the narrative and then savagely dismissing them revolution – a serious superhero film for grown-ups.

It’s Unforgiven, Terminator 2 and Shane all rolled into one – with a bleached visual look straight out of the 1970s. Jackman and Stewart are both superb, while the eclectic supporting cast includes Richard E Grant, Eriq La Salle, Stephen Merchant and Boyd Holbrook.

More importantly, Logan is the Wolverine movie fans wanted and deserved, with more than enough action and special effects to satisfy. – James Croot
