Easter eggs have become ‘‘everyday’’ rather than the special one-off-event they used to be. So how do we navigate months of Easter egg temptation, and are some eggs better than others? We set out to help by comparing four popular choices.
Everyone knows Easter eggs are not good for health. But there are subtle differences. Dark chocolate is better than milk chocolate because cocoa is rich in antioxidants. Also sugar content can vary as can the type of oils (avoid eggs with palm oil). Different fillings – like caramello and marshmallow – change the fat/sugar balance, and portion size is of utmost importance when it comes to health. Nutritionally, small hollow eggs made from quality dark chocolate (greater than 65 per cent cocoa solids) are the best option.
