Pick of the bunch
Greek yoghurt has surged in popularity and it seems there are as many varieties as the regular stuff. But is it a better choice, and are some varieties better than others? We set out to help by comparing three leading brands for nutrition, cost and taste. Traditional Greek yoghurt is regular yoghurt strained to remove liquid whey and lactose. The result is a thicker yoghurt with higher protein, less sodium and less sugar. Fat content can vary depending on type of milk used (skim or full cream) and whether cream has been added; since milk fat is largely saturated, the less fat the better. Options with no sugar and low fat are best choices for heart health and weight. Greek yoghurts are great alternatives to sour cream and mayonnaise but because they are usually higher in fat than traditional yoghurt, not ideal as regular breakfast fare. When choosing, go for traditionally strained Greek yoghurt with a low-fat content. ● Products are tested by NZ Registered nutritionist Bronwen King and a diverse, randomly selected group. prise open its resistance.
