Search me: Winston’s most popular tweet
WINSTON Peters has had a serious facepalm social media moment but he says it wasn’t his doing.
The NZ First leader yesterday tweeted what appeared to be a social media search on himself: ‘‘Tweets on Winston Peters NZ politician’’.
The words probably meant for the search bar – and his eyes only – were instead shared with his 14,800 Twitter followers.
What came next was a stream of retweets, likes and joking comments, making the gaffe into what now appears to be his most popular tweet of all time.
The tweet had received almost 200 likes and more than 100 retweets before lunchtime while most of the longtime politician’s previous tweets garnered a few dozen likes, at best.
While it seemed like a mistake that could easily be made by someone not from the social media generation, Peters said he wasn’t the one who posted the tweet.
Peters told his Twitter followers: ‘‘Relax the culprit has been found’’.
However, the 72-year-old MP refused to say who pushed the button refusing to asnwer whether he was disappointed it had become his most popular tweet and adding only that he was going to leave the post where it was.
‘‘Because frankly it’s giving a lot of people, on a boring Saturday, something to laugh about’’.
