Album out, 40,000 emails later

Rmike.alexander@fairfaxmed­ia.co.nz EARLIER this year Kiwi artist Kane Strang released the single Oh You’re So Off, from a then untitled album to be released on United States label Dead Oceans. He then headed offshore for an extended tour of the US. What are you plugging right now?

My new album called Two Hearts and No Brain, out June 30 on Dead Oceans. What of someone else’s do you want to plug (music, art, food, store etc)?

My friend Tom just opened up a coffee cart in Dunedin called Hussey and Laredo. They’re by the uni on Mondays and Wednesdays. How did you initially get involved in music and how long have you been part of it?

I was concussed one too many Supplied times playing rugby and had to find something else to do. I also come from a musical family. I’ve been playing since I was about 14. What is a song you remember from childhood?

I remember driving around with mymumliste­ning to Fast Car, by Tracy Chapman. What was the first piece of music you purchased?

Probably a Backstreet Boys CD from Disc Den in Dunedin. I also have a really vivid memory of getting the Blue Album by Weezer with some Real Groovy vouchers. What are the ingredient­s for a great live performanc­e – as a performer or an audience member?

Sincerity and cool dance moves. How do you balance music with other obligation­s – partner, children, job?

I’m still figuring that out. Can you describe a perfect Saturday?

Maybe walking my dog and getting some dumplings from the Farmers’ Market. What do you do to relax? Play video games. Eat heaps. What’s your idea of happiness?

Getting to travel, collaborat­e with my friends on projects and make a living off doing what I like. What life lesson would you pass on?

Work hospo as a last resort. Which living person do you most admire and why?

My nana because she’s still partying in Vegas when she can and always helping her community. What’s your most embarrassi­ng moment that you’re prepared to share?

I accidental­ly smashed a water jug all over a table of customers when I worked as a waiter. Drink of choice? OJ. What are you reading right now?

I’ve been halfway through Just Kids by Patti Smith for a long time and am determined to finish it on this next tour. Listening to?

I’d walk dogs for people ‘cause I like dogs and need the exercise. What’s exciting you at the moment?

Going to London. What’s freaking you out?
