Dad and daughter score Kiwi diving adventure

- HELEN HARVEY

A dream summer job awaits 17-year-old Sian Tran-Lawrence after she and her dad were asked to tour New Zealand’s most spectacular dive sites.

They’ll record their journey on their Instagram account #ohamoana as official ambassadors for Atlantis Dive gear.

They won’t be getting paid for their efforts but have been kitted out with new gear for their adventure.

But first Sian, who is in Year 12 at New Plymouth Girls’ High School, has to finish her exams. Then the family, including her mumand two sisters, will get on a new 34-ft yacht and head north.

Sian wasn’t nervous about her new adventure. ‘‘Our whole family is pretty extrovert, so I’m used to getting out there talking to people, and I’ve done a fair bit of drama through school. But, it’s going to be weird just talking to a camera and pretending people are watching.

‘‘I’ve always seen things from the surface of the water with sailing, so it will be cool to see underneath. I want to find a shipwreck. I think that will be awesome.’’

Firefighter Tran Lawrence said he had been diving for more than 20 years and wanted to get young people interested. ‘‘When I was younger everyone wanted to do a dive course, but now not many people are getting into it. We’re wondering why, especially since we have world class diving in New Zealand.

‘‘So, hopefully, we’ll get to dive some of New Zealand’s most beautiful locations. We’ll record it and stick it online and see how it goes.’’
