Hat’s magic: Fashion win after last-minute millinery

- RUBY MACANDREW

NOT even a ‘‘hat disaster’’ could derail former Miss New Zealand Deborah Lambie’s quest to snapped up the big fashion prize at this year’s Wellington Cup at Trentham Racecourse.

After winning the Maiden of the Carnival category earlier in the day, Lambie was named Fashion in the Field’s Supreme Winner with judge and Trelise Cooper codesigner Julia Leuchars saying ‘‘she was modern and beautiful and I loved her detailing – her attention to detail was fantastic’’.

Lambie entered last year’s competition, but failed to place, making her eligible to enter the Maiden category again this time around.

But the award nearly never eventuated after her intended headwear failed to arrive in time for the big day.

‘‘Ceri [McVinnie] ran all over Auckland to make me a new hat which is so beautiful and ties into my outfit perfectly,’’ she said.

‘‘I couldn’t imagine, after feeling so stressed yesterday, that I would end up winning.’’

Lambie said she was looking forward to travelling to Melbourne to attend the Victoria Racing Club’s Crown oaks race day – one part of the major prize pack awarded to the Supreme Winner.

She will also receive $500 spending money, the use of a Mercedes Benz for the weekend and entry in to the Prix de Fashion Finals at Ellerslie including flights and accommodation for two.
