Man in court over police chase

- CATRIN OWEN

A man charged with driving and firearms offences after a highspeed police chase across Auckland has appeared in court.

Police fired at a fleeing red Holden sedan after officers were led across Auckland, following reports the driver allegedly rammed other vehicles and drove on the wrong side of the road on Thursday.

Anthony Edward Rangi appeared at North Shore District Court yesterday and was remanded in custody without a plea.

The 44-year-old from south Auckland was dressed in a blue boiler suit and sported multiple bandages on his abdomen after being bitten by a police dog.

He held on to the side of the dock to support himself, groaning, coughing and breathing heavily every couple of minutes.

Rangi has been charged with a variety of driving and firearms offences, including possession of a pistol, discharging a pistol, assaulting a police officer and a police constable using a car, operating a vehicle recklessly, driving a vehicle without a licence and failing to stop for police.

The drama began at 3.10pm on Thursday on the North Shore but the car was finally brought to a stop in South Auckland 4.25pm.

Rang was released from Middlemore Hospital on Friday and taken to Henderson Police Station to be charged in relation to the incident.

His next court appearance is due tomorrow.
