Khan’s comeback a rich treat

- Kate Robertson

Attention, this is not a drill. Chaka Khan has released her first album in 12 whole years. If you’re covering your ears, preparing for a trainwreck, take a big old exhale because Hello Happiness is a groove-laden success.

The first single from the album, Like Sugar, is rooted in funk and R&B (what Khan does best), and also possesses just the right amount of electronic edge. That edge comes courtesy of Major Lazer co-founder Switch, and it is fresh to death.

Sing it with me: ‘‘It’s like sugar, so sweet / Good enough, to eat’’.

Khan told Billboard she’s ‘‘tired of hearing bad news’’, so she made an album that doesn’t indulge any of it.

As someone who spent the week leaning into Brandi Carlile’s heartbreaker

The Joke (how about that Grammys performance?), Khan’s comeback is a rich, joy-filled shot of life.

It would be rude to shout out fierce, feel-good tracks without giving mention to Lizzo.

Lizzo’s been grinding away (literally and metaphorically) since 2012, but 2019 is shaping up to be the year she saturates the mainstream, and rightfully so. Her recently released single Juice has landed her spots on Ellen, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and earlier this month, she was revealed as The Cut’s February cover girl.

Her lyrics are witty, sharp and scream pop culture. She’s here for the good vibes and the good vibes only. Did I mention she loves a flute solo, too?

If you can’t get enough of Juice, the single that came earlier, Good As Hell, makes for damn fine companion listening.
