Listen to some riveting true crime tales

There’s been a renaissance in the popularity of true crime podcast Dirty John recently following the release of the TV series by the same name on Netflix.

The team behind the podcast is Wondery. Its latest offering, Over My Dead Body dropped last week and it’s a ripper.

The podcast tells the story of the whirlwind romance of two successful lawyers, Wendi Adelson and Dan Markel, who married in 2006, and settled in the sleepy Florida city of Tallahassee.

When Wendi left with the kids in September 2012, it led to a horrible custody battle and divorce, with both trying to outwit each other in court.

Then in July 2014, Dan was shot dead in broad daylight outside his upmarket home.

As police tried to piece together who killed him, a variety of suspects come to the fore, including Wendi’s affluent family and the Latin Kings gang. This unbelievable podcast is certainly the next made-for-TV podcast success.

I’ve also been mesmerised by Conviction, a podcast that explores injustice and corrupt cops in the Bronx area of New York. The podcast’s central character is ex-cop turned private investigator Emanuel ‘‘Manny’’ Gomez who, in the summer of 2016, took on the case of wrongful arrest of a teenager named Pedro Hernandez.

Hernandez, then 16, was accused of shooting a 15-year-old during an argument. Manny is a complicated anti-hero, fuelled by a Robin Hood need to be seen as a saviour.

The podcast is an investigative masterclass from host Saki Knafo, who did the original reporting over a twoyear period for The New York Times Magazine.
