A Kiwi Star Wars fan unwittingly found himself at the centre of a dramatic melee in Canada after surreptitiously trying to check his phone during a screening of the much-waited film.

The aftermath was filmed and posted online, where it’s been viewed thousands of times.

The incident occurred in Vancouver during a screening of the new movie Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker on Friday night NZ time.

Joseph Harrison told the Sunday News he and his wife Danielle had been excited for their first night out together since having their second child.

The former Masterton man said he tended to have ‘‘incredibly bad luck’’ at times, and this rang true after the couple’s date night ended up with Harrison getting a bruised nose.

Soon after the movie started Harrison felt his phone vibrate. Worried that it was the babysitter, he carefully checked it.

Despite his phone being on silent and having the brightness turned down, it was enough to anger the movie-goer next to him, he said.

The man, who appeared to have been drinking, swore at him and hit him in the face. ‘

Harrison stayed calm rather than retaliating. His wife alerted staff who paused the movie, turned the lights on and removed the man from the cinema.

The aftermath was captured on video by another movie-goer and posted online. In the video, the man can be heard angrily shouting, and seen pointing at people and gesturing with his phone.

‘‘I am a real Star Wars fan,’’ he can be heard yelling. ‘‘Turn your phones off.’’

Harrison was glad he had been removed, but said he was surprised he’d been allowed into the cinema at all. ‘‘That type of behaviour is quite scary.’’

Police were called but were unable to find the offender.
