A bay either way in this seaside gem

This low-maintenance gem offers easy access to two beaches, writes Rosalind Le Bas Walker.

THIS BEACHSIDE home’s carefully planned design by its architect owner makes the most of the ocean views and glorious dual-beach location.

Bifold windows in the home’s lounge open out to the view of Stephens Bay’s sandy beach, the wider vistas of Tasman Bay and at night, the sparkling lights of Nelson City.

‘‘It is rare to be able to have not only stunning views but also to smell and hear the ocean,’’ says Jan Long, who has enjoyed visiting the relaxed, light and airy home, which is three minutes’ walk from the sea.

Two decks offer a choice of aspects. Directly off the lounge and kitchen, the southwest balcony gets the last of the evening sun during the hot summer months, while the deck off the dining room receives the sun from mid-morning to mid/ late afternoon.

The stainless steel work surfaces in the galley-style kitchen are strategically screened from the lounge and some of the dining zones, yet allow interaction with these spaces.

‘‘It is a gorgeous spot allowing views not only of the beach but also the bush reserve over the road and the hills to the west,’’ says Jan, who has lived in the area for more than 30 years.

The site’s sunny sheltered back garden with a thriving tamarillo tree can be seen through the dining room’s large timber-framed sliding doors. ‘‘This is a safe haven for small children,’’ says Jan.

The owners have holidayed at their low-maintenance, lock-upand-leave home for 13 years. Clad in Zincalume with anodised aluminium windows, the home was built in 1999 and is ideal for the seaside conditions.

The large double garage accommodates a boat as well as a vehicle. A large level parking area also has space for a boat and several cars.

The two bays, which are within a short easy walk, face different directions so offer different opportunities depending on the weather.

Dummy Bay is a private little beach with golden sand, sheltered from the northerly winds.

Neighbouring Stephens Bay has a boat ramp and a sheltered inlet that is a great spot for children to play when the tide is in.

Thirteen kilometres east of the town of Motueka, there is a friendly ambience within the community of Stephens Bay, says Jan.

‘‘A reasonable number of people live permanently at Stephens Bay and consequently there is a caring neighbourhood enveloping the area.’’
