QMy children are now 10 and 8 and reaching the age that when we travel they will have memories of the places that we go. In the past we have taken them to easy/safe places like Chicago, Gold Coast, Vanuatu. But now I would like to take them somewhere they will learn a bit more about life, and how theirs is pretty blessed compared to other countries in the world. I want to show them other cultures without having to worry too much about their safety. Can you advise of a few countries or itinerary that might fit the bill?

AAsia has come much closer to home with direct flights from Wellington to Singapore starting in September. You can incorporate a three-day stopover in Singapore en route to Kota Kinabalu, where you can get a taste of Borneo’s mountain life.

Surrounding the Kinabalu Park is a multitude of natural attractions and enjoyable activities such as mountain biking, golf, birding, farm tours, canopy walk and, of course, photography!

With a trip like this, you will also be able to satisfy your taste buds with beautiful local delicacies.

To end your holiday, you can swim or snorkel in the clear, turquoise waters of the South China Sea before going home.

From enjoying a sunrise over the Taj Mahal or hanging with the local ‘‘man of the forest’’ in Borneo, to visiting the mighty temple of the Tooth or exploring the mysterious ruins at Machu Picchu, we can introduce your family to new experiences that will create lasting memories.

A lot depends on the time of year and total time you wish to be away – feel free to pop in for a chat and we can discuss an itinerary based on your family’s needs. – Sujata Annavarapu, owner operator, House of Travel Johnsonville
