5 things to do in winter

-

1. Hit the slopes

Snow bunnies rejoice – the 2016 ski season is finally on us. New Zealand’s snow fields cater to everyone from complete beginners to the most avid skiers and boarders. Visit newzealandski.co.nz.

2. Take a scenic train trip

The TranzAlpine, passing through the Southern Alps between Christchurch and Greymouth, is regarded as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. It’s arguably at its most spectacular during winter, when you can survey the magical snowy landscapes from the warmth and comfort of your carriage. Visit kiwirailscenic.co.nz/tranzalpine.

3. Celebrate Matariki

When the Matariki star cluster appears in the sky, it signals the start of the Maori New Year. This year it officially begins on June 6, kicking off a month-long celebration all over the country. Visit Te Papa in Wellington for a full programme of events and exhibitions.

4. Eat lots of chocolate

Winter is not the time to be worrying about your waistline. Indulge at the Cadbury Chocolate Carnival in Dunedin, held from July 16-22. Events include a chocolate degustation dinner at Glenfalloch, a beer and chocolate matching session at Speight’s Brewery, and the iconic Jaffa race down Baldwin St. Visit cadbury.co.nz/joy/carnival.

5. Soak in a hot spring

Not a fan of the cold? This time of year is perfect for heading to Hanmer Springs, a picture-perfect alpine village just 90 minutes from Christchurch. Soak in the natural hot pools as snow falls all around you. Bliss.
