Glamping craze offers country fun and extra income

- JILL GALLOWAY

Rural weekend getaways under the stars are becoming an attractive option for city-dwellers as farmers set up high-end camping spots to diversify their income.

Glamping, as it’s better known, mixes sleeping under canvas with the comforts of home – an inner-sprung king-size bed under a double-layer duvet, a beer and wine fridge in the corner – maybe even an anti-plasto plate on the table outside.

Ridge Top Farm in northern Manawatu offers panoramic views of Kapiti Island, Mt Mt Taranaki and Mt Ruapehu on a 607-hectare sheep and beef property.

There’s a campfire, kitchen, outdoor bath, as well as a hot shower and the option of food.

Farmers Angus and Sarah Gilbertson said that although initial set-up costs were about $50,000, the glamping operation was now providing a decent secondary income.

‘‘My husband Angus is the main income earner from our sheep and beef farm, but glamping was a lifestyle choice for us,’’ Sarah said.

‘‘It is a secondary income, and with three children I can be at home, otherwise I’d be working in town and finding childcare.’’

Bay of Plenty’s Chattan Farm is another unique spot with extensive native bush tracks and a kokako sanctuary.

In the tight economic conditions, glamping is a welcome source of income for many farmers feeling the pinch – with some sites bringing in more than $400 a night.

But Federated Farmers is warning members who want to take on a second business to make sure they don’t take their eye off the ball.

‘‘It is an opportunity to diversify for some farms. But people who opt for glamping have to be aware of the effort it takes,’’ said national president William Rolleston.

‘‘People need to go into it with their eyes open. Those that do it well, will be successful. But people have to be aware that it doesn’t detract from the farm. Customers are a lot better at complaining than animals are.’’
