Rating the All Blacks

- MARC HINTON

15 Israel Dagg

Great night from the rejuvenated fullback, who ended up on the right wing. Ran for 196m and left his impression all over this game, sealing the deal with an 80th minute try. One slip when he blew a try in the 68th minute, but everything else was class. 9/10

14 Ben Smith

Another outstanding display from this world-class operator who is just as effective on the wing as at fullback. Quality finish in the corner for the first try and was everywhere in a brilliant first 40. Slipped in at second five for last quarter of hour. 8.5

13 George Moala

Pretty respectable effort in just his second test. Made three decent breaks, scored one try, and blew another when he ignored men outside to take it to the line and lost the ball. Decision-making his work-on. 7

12 Ryan Crotty

Nothing special from the no-frills second five before being replaced. Shifted ball when he needed to and made his tackles.6

11 Julian Savea, above

Would have been desperate to make a big impression, but just couldn’t manage it. Made an early error on the catch and had one or two other shaky moments. One nice run, and went looking for work, but ball just didn’t come his way much. 5

10 Beauden Barrett

Outstanding. Again. Started at first five, finished at fullback, scored two quality tries and caused all sorts of havoc with his running and creativity. Goalkicking spot-on too. Proved he’s a starter, if required. 9 9 Aaron Smith Super sharp from the off, and got the All Blacks rolling as he found his runners with precision and skill. Bullet pass put his mate Ben Smith in for the opening score. Such a key man when playing at this sort of pace. 8

8 Kieran Read, c

Another standout display from the skipper. Not as prominent with ball in this one, but did everything with commitment and efficiency. On top of his game. 8 7 Sam Cane Had a few shaky moments and eventually sin-binned after his fourth infringement. But came back well to finish the match strongly. Nice touch to put Coles in and his turnover set Dagg free at the end. 7

6 Elliot Dixon

Solid rather than spectacular effort on debut. One dropped ball, but otherwise got through plenty of work and made his tackles. Not yet at Kaino’s level. 6

5 Sam Whitelock

Upstaged by his second-row partner, but another solid night’s work for a fellow who thrives in the tight exchanges. 6

4 Brodie Retallick, bottom

Outstanding display from best forward on the park. Made tackles, hit rucks, carried hard and cleaned rucks. An aggressive physical force. 9

3 Charlie Faumuina Enjoyed his first start of series, and got through his work very well. Carries well for a prop, tackles with impact and part of a dominant scrum. 7

2 Dane Coles Got better as game went on, and notched his sixth test try with a nice finish off Cane’s smart offload. Fell off one tackle and missed a lineout throw, but still a good night. 7.5

1 Joe Moody One massive scrum where he popped his opposite number right out of the set piece. Got through his work with his usual minimum of fuss. 7

Reserves 16 Codie Taylor (72m, Coles)

Not enough time to have an impact. 4

17 Wyatt Crockett (Moody)

Carried strongly when required and held up the scrum in the second half. 5

18 Ofa Tu’ungafasi (53m, Faumuina)

Will have enjoyed a dominant test debut. 4

19 Luke Romano (65m, Retallick)

Nothing flashy. Turned over once, too high on the carry. 4

20 Liam Squire (55m, Dixon)

Came in and made big impact with his carries. Nice debut. 7

21 TJ Perenara (72m, A Smith)

Would have enjoyed his return to action. 5

22 Lima Sopoaga (55m, Crotty)

Dropped one ball, one nice chip kick. Not helped by scrappy play late. 5

23 Waisake Naholo (49m, Moala)

Nothing outstanding but showed he can handle centre at a pinch. 6
