‘What do we do on this show? . . . Drink’
You might not expect the conversation to revolve around Brexit when The Real Housewives of Auckland get together, but goats?
The six ‘‘luxury-loving ladies’’, as described in their PR material, gathered for a photo shoot in ‘‘deepest, darkest Remuera’’, as described by broadcaster Louise Wallace, to promote the new Bravo TV channel going live today.
It is entirely dedicated to unscripted programming, and The Real Housewives of Auckland is its most-anticipated offering.
Over two hours, as the Housewives primped and posed and fiddled with their phones, two consistent themes emerged: goats and Champagne.
Socialite Gilda Kirkpatrick and former model Michelle Blanchard recently appeared on a TV chat show, following a segment featuring live goats.
Kirkpatrick, an animal lover, was concerned for their comfort.
Stylist Angela Stone suggested they weren’t particularly nice animals, or easy to manage.
‘‘Good thing I wasn’t there in my goat jacket!’’ quipped Champagne importer Anne Batley Burton, who opened a bottle of Jacquart at 10.40am, which surprised none of the Housewives.
Batley Burton, wearing a chunky Cartier panther necklace and ring, explained that Champagne is the only drink a woman can consume every day and still look beautiful.
‘‘What do they do on this show?’’ asked Wallace, putting herself in the mind of the viewers. ‘‘Just drink? Pretty much.’’
The women are an interesting mix of ballsy and circumspect.
Batley Burton and businesswoman Julia Sloane arrived late to the shoot because they were on the Paul Henry show, where they revealed as little as possible about The Real Housewives of Auckland.
Apparently Henry wanted to know who was the programme’s ‘‘bitch’’, a role he assumed belonged to Wallace.
‘‘I’m doing Paul Henry next week,’’ said Wallace. ‘‘But I’m going on as me.’’
‘‘What’s the difference, Lou?’’ asked one of the PR reps.
‘‘There’s not meant to be one,’’ said Wallace. ‘‘I’m fully expecting to get the boot.’’
The ballroom at Cotter House in Remuera was pulled into service as a dressing room, with a rack for dresses, four lighted makeup tables, Louis Vuitton bags tossed on the floor, Chanel loafers kicked aside. A glamorous shambles.
Arranged into a pleasing formation, the Housewives pouted in unison.
Showtime.
