Panuku tackles suburban mall

-

Auckland’s Old Papatoetoe mall is about to get a new lease of life.

The Manukau mall is part of a 2.5 hectare block owned by Auckland Council and Panuku, the council’s development arm, wants to renew the area with a new plaza space and a reconfiguration of shops.

It has sold the site of the mall’s New World supermarket to Foodstuffs, which expects to begin expansion work in 2017.

Panuku is also working with a private developer to build around 80 apartments and terrace houses on the large carpark adjacent to nearby Tavern Lane. The project is still in the planning stages.

Meanwhile, the council plans to start work on a reconfiguration of the carpark and an upgrade of the mall.

‘‘Old Papatoetoe has been identified as a growth area over the next decade’’ O¯ tara-Papatoetoe Local Board chair Fa’ana¯na¯ Efeso Collins said.

‘‘It’s excellent to see Foodstuffs acknowledging that through their investment in the popular supermarket.’’

Panuku director Allan Young said it was an exciting time for Papatoetoe.

‘‘We have secured an excellent mix of medical and health focused tenants for the refreshed mall, and coupled with an upgraded New World this will really pump new life into the area.’’

Earlier this week Panuku said it had been given resource consent for a 60-home subdivision in Whangaparaoa with McConnell Property.
