Murder charge after stabbing

Neighbours heard screams from a house where a man was stabbed to death in Kaitaia.

A 29-year-old man suffered multiple stab wounds at about 2.30am yesterday. Despite receiving medical attention at the scene and at hospital, he died from the injuries.

A 30-year-old man, understood to be a relative, appeared in Kaitaia District Court charged with murder. Both men were granted interim name suppressio­n.

A nearby resident who wanted to remain anonymous said she heard lots of We heard screaming and yelling and swearing and everything. noise and yelling at the address go-kart engine was started.

‘‘One of the boys must have started that up and then the mum came out to tell him to turn it off.

‘‘Then they started arguing after about it, a I don’t know what was going on,’’ she said.

‘‘They started fighting outside and then they sort of calmed down a bit, and then about half an hour later they went inside and that’s when it really went off.

‘‘Then we heard screaming and yelling and swearing and everything.’’

She said a resident left the house to call emergency services after the victim was stabbed because there was so much screaming going on.

Tributes have started to pour in for the deceased on Facebook, with family and friends describing him as a fun and loving man. It is believed he has left behind two children and a partner.
