A stupid age

-

Your July 17 edition featured two articles on Donald Trump. One related to the Republican National Convention in Ohio to appoint him as their presidential nominee. Why are the party faithful asking casino mogul Sheldon Adelson for an emergency donation of US$6 million (NZ$8.4m) to cover the cost of this event when Trump himself is a billionaire?

Directly underneath that article is one headlined ‘‘Humanity facing the ’Age of Stupidity’, scientists say’’.

Your honour, I rest my case. Ahmed Asgher, Oratia

I can’t agree with Danielle McLaughlin on Hillary Clinton’s emails (‘‘No shortage of political theatre’’, World, July 17). What she fails to mention is Clinton did all of her business as secretary of state on a private server in her basement. She destroyed 30,000 emails, the server was unsecured and most probably hacked by foreign powers. She did this to escape freedom of information requests and congressional oversight. In the words of the FBI director she was ‘‘extremely careless’’ which is the legal definition of ‘‘grossly negligent’’. It’s not sloppiness, it’s deliberate evasion.

What General David Petraeus did was far less. If she was anyone else but a Clinton she would have been indicted. Scott Lelievre, Masterton
