Q. Hello, I am planning a trip to the Middle East. I’m thinking of flying to Dubai then getting connecting flights to Muscat, Tehran, Amman and then out of Tel Aviv.
Do you think this is a good idea, or do you have a better plan? I have about a month. Is solo travel safe in Oman, Iran, Jordan and Israel? Is there anything I should look out for?
A. What a fascinating area of the world to explore!
Places like Dubai and Oman are safe for the independent solo traveller, however we would recommend booking a tour for Iran, Jordan and Israel.
Oman packs a lot in a small package with desert, rugged coast and fantastic beaches, water sports and diving, green valleys, old school bazaars and Arabian hospitality.
Dubai is a large modern city which is now a well-worn stopover point, which Kiwis often find easy to explore and navigate on their own.
There are a few companies that offer small group experiences in Iran, Jordan and Israel, providing not only great value and the benefit of travelling with likeminded travellers and knowledgeable tour leaders, but also safety and security.
