The ‘real’ Richie

Along with co-director Michelle Walshe, Justin Pemberton spent a year following Richie McCaw around as McCaw sought to finish his All Black career on the perfect note in 2015 – by retaining the Rugby World Cup.

As the resulting documentary Chasing Great prepares to make its debut in New Zealand cinemas this week, Pemberton talks about the daunting task that its creation involved.

Trying to do an intimate, observational documentary with one of the most recognisable figures in New Zealand must have been hard. How did you, and he, navigate that?
