Q. I’m planning a trip to Asia for the first time and want to see China, Japan and Korea. I have about three weeks’ leave. What would you consider to be the highlights of these places? How much will I realistically be able to see in this amount of time?
A: These three amazing countries have so much to offer, in particular China given the size, varying landscapes and climate. To get the most out of your time I suggest focusing on small areas of each country so you get the chance to immerse yourself in their culture and really enjoy your experiences.
In China, I would recommend basing yourself in Beijing and experiencing the wonder of the Terracotta Warriors, the Great Wall and the Forbidden City.
In Japan, you can explore the fascinating ancient sites of Kyoto, sleep in a ryokan, Japan’s traditional accommodation, and wander around the beautifully preserved town of Takayama.
Finally, in South Korea, step back in time in the Gyeongbokgung Palace Seoul, which was built in 1395, search for a bargain at the Dongdaemun markets, spend a night in the beautiful Seoraksan National Park and have a close encounter with North Korea at the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ).
A week in each country should be sufficient for seeing these highlights and getting a feel for the different cultures. Enjoy! – Paul Reid, travel consultant, House of Travel Dunedin
