Punter loses $94,000 on bet

-

Wellington’s loss to North Harbour in the Mitre 10 Cup championship semifinal has come at a huge cost for one unlucky punter who lost a whopping $94,000 on the result.

The massive bet was placed late in the first half with the Lions leading 18-13 at Westpac Stadium, with the home team paying $1.25 to go on with the win.

The person in question stood to collect $23,500 if Wellington had gone on with the result. But given they had lost their last two games heading into the semis, a victory was no sure thing.

And it wasn’t long before the punter was made to regret the wager as two tries either side of halftime saw Harbour take a 12-point lead.

Wellington fought back and with 11 minutes to go looked like they might finish over the top of the visitors when they drew level at 30-30.

However, Harbour took the win 40-37 thanks to a Daniel Hilton-Jones try and Bryn Gatland penalty.
