Mums target market for healthy snacks

- COLLETTE DEVLIN

Most of us have experienced the 3pm slump, where we reach for the chocolate to stave off hunger, only to regret it later.

Two Wellington mums have set out to change our eating habits one box of snacks at a time.

Debbie Turner and Christina Hall have launched their national snack box delivery business, Good Grazing.

The women, who met at antenatal classes 10 years ago, dreamt up the snack box delivery concept over their kitchen tables after both struggled to access healthy snacks for themselves and their families.

The success of subscriptionbased food delivery businesses such as My Food Bag inspired the pair to give it a go.

Turner, who has a background in the health and food industry, was also motivated after seeing the difference healthy eating made to her family.

‘‘We started Good Grazing as a way of sharing what we have learnt, to make it easier to snack healthy. We realised there was a gap in the market with no-one else selling dedicated health food snack boxes – it’s the My Food Bag of snacks.’’

She was confident their selffunded business would be a success.

‘‘So many people want to eat healthily. They have dinner and lunch sorted, but come 3pm they are surrounded by vending machines and dairies and that is where most people fall down.’’

The products were perfect for busy parents, students and for people at work, she said.

She believed it would also be an attractive option for people working in isolated rural areas.

Products were sourced at farmers markets, health food artisans and from traditional brands.

‘‘We’re always looking for new, great products to include so the boxes will vary from month to month to keep people’s taste buds happy. We’ve had great feedback from producers,’’ Hall said Hall, a mother of three.

Hall, a mother of three, decided to turn her energies towards healthy foods after years working in the food business.

‘‘It can be time-consuming and a hassle to hunt down healthy snack options. Our Good Grazing boxes will make it easy for people who are time-poor to have junkfree snacks at their fingertips,’’ she said.

The pair have just employed a nutritionist who will review every product, which will also be tastetested.

Each box includes a variety of snacks such as triple nut banana bars, protein balls and kalamata olive crackers.

The boxes can be bought on a monthly, annual or ‘one-off’ basis and start at $44 a box per month.

The monthly boxes will also contain healthy snacking tips and a recipe for a healthy snack.
