There truly are some amazing wonders in Europe – sights such as the Eiffel tower, Colosseum, Big Ben and the Leaning Tower of Pisa are spectacular and feature on many must-see travel lists, but it can be difficult to navigate the crowds when it’s an attraction that’s on everyone’s bucket list.

I often get asked about the destinations that offer just as much of a ‘‘wow factor’’ but are lesser known.

A lot of my favourites are found in Eastern Europe; the region offers many opportunities to blend spectacular scenery with some truly unique experiences.

At the top of my list of must visits would be the breathtaking vistas found in the coastal town of Kotor in Montenegro.

A Unesco World Heritage Site nestled into the Bay of Kotor, it also happens to be the Mediterranean Sea’s deepest natural fjord.

Although it’s certainly not as crowded as other parts of Europe, it has been gaining steady popularity, especially among cruise ship tourists.

Other highlights in Eastern Europe include the pretty village of Kumrovec in Croatia, the Pieniny National Park hidden among the Slovak mountains and Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina where you can visit the Sarajevo Tunnel built between 1992 and 1995 during the Bosnian War.
