Pilot farewelled

Pilot John Shuttlewor­th was remembered as a modern-day renegade sky pirate to his grandchild­ren at his funeral yesterday. They were among the hundreds who turned out to celebrate Shuttlewor­th’s life at the place where he died last Tuesday, doing what he loved, flying – his beloved Waharoa Aerodrome. They were there to honour the life a man described as a typical Kiwi bloke and a "bloody good bugger".

Arrest in hit and run

A man has been arrested in relation to a hit-and-run outside a Whanganui pub, which has left another man critically injured in hospital. Whanganui Police arrested the 61-year-old man yesterday afternoon after a young man was hit by a car outside the Red Lion Inn on Whanganui’s Anzac Parade about 2.15am. It happened as police were investigat­ing a brawl outside the Red Lion Inn involving as many as 15 people.

Air Force rescues Dutch tourist

A Dutch tourist stranded on Mt Taranaki was been dropped off safely at his car yesterday by an Air Force helicopter. The 29-year-old tramper had been pinned down by heavy snow in the Egmont National Park since Thursday. On Friday afternoon he was told to hunker down in Syme Hut on Mt Taranaki overnight until weather conditions were better for rescue teams to reach him.
