Two good to be true

- MAT KERMEEN

KAREN Parsons’ relief at hearing stable apprentice Gosen Jogoo was up and walking was just as satisfying as taking out the quinella in the Dunedin Guineas yesterday.

Parsons, who trains in partnership with husband John, produced Residential and Starvoia for first and second in the $50,000 Listed Dunedin Guineas.

Jogoo’s ride aboard Residential was yet another reminder of the Mauritius-born rider’s rare talent.

But just three races after celebrating his first black type success in New Zealand, Jogoo was dumped to the deck as Carpathia put on a rodeo performance shortly after the start of race seven.

‘‘I couldn’t believe it,’’ Karen Parsons said. ‘‘It was such a relief when I saw him there standing down by the ambulance. He went a beauty so I was worried.’’

Jogoo was checked by St Johns staff and cleared of any injuries.

Jogoo has won 68 races since arriving in New Zealand back in 2014, but his time in the saddle as been hampered by a couple of months on the sidelines with a broken ankle in the winter of 2016 and three months out in the previous summer with a fractured cheek bone and dislocated jaw. ‘‘He doesn’t need any more bad luck. He’s such a great kid,’’ Parsons said. Racing in the Waikato Stud colours, Residential was given a perfect trip from Jogoo on the rails before he angled into a gap at the 350m mark to fight out the finish with Starvoia. It was her third win in nine starts for the daughter of Pins out of Elusive City mare Metropolitan.
