Golfing PM

-

I have always enjoyed Mark Reason’s thoughtful and challenging columns on sport and sporting personalities, but I must express disappointment at the attack on John Key last Sunday (‘‘Key goes from PM to shameless salesman in record time’’).

Key spent over eight years doing a great job for us, working huge hours while not taking a salary.

He was his own man, and I admire his decision to resign, for whatever was the reason. He had made his contribution.

Reason’s letter smacks of envy that Key has the audacity to enjoy himself playing golf in his ‘‘retirement’’ alongside people in the world league he is comfortable with. Good on him, and I wish him luck – he deserves it, and if he is playing in a sponsored tournament in Perth as a private individual, not prime minister, that’s his business – he owes us nothing and I certainly was not embarrassed he was wearing the sponsor’s logo and ‘‘promoting’’ the tourney. He spent years doing that pretty well for us and tourism in New Zealand. Brian Gore, Rotorua TO PUT an end to Reason’s finger-twitching late at night, causing him to be terribly upset about being forced to watch Key playing golf may I suggest he just goes to bed early, preferably with a good laxative.
