McLaren steps up a notch

- DAMIEN O’CARROLL

McLaren chose the Geneva show to unveil its latest Super Series car, the all-new 720S.

According to the British manufacturer the new 720S is lighter, faster and ‘‘even more dynamically capable’’ than its predecessor, the 650S, and has ‘‘unparalleled levels of interior space and sophistication and a breadth and depth of abilities that will engage and exhilarate the driver’’.

The M480T 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 engine that powers the 720S has 41 per cent new part-content compared with the 3.8-litre engine that continues to feature in the McLaren Sports Series, and produces 530kW of power (or 720PS, hence the name) and 770Nm of torque.

The 720S will knock off the 0-100kmh sprint in less than three seconds and just five seconds later the car will have ripped past the 200kmh mark on its way to a maximum speed of 341kmh.

McLaren also claims the 720S delivers 10.7 litres/100km combined fuel economy and CO2 emissions of just 249g/km in the New European Driving Cycle. Probably not if you’re trying the 0-100kmh run though.

Inside the 720S is slathered with leather and machined aluminium and also debuts the new McLaren Driver Interface, which comprises a folding driver display and central infotainment screen.

The company says the 720S is available to order from McLaren retailers now, with the first customers scheduled to receive their cars in May.

Three grades of specification will be offered – standard, Performance and Luxury.
