Thousands of canines descend on the North

- RACHEL CLAYTON

Main centres around New Zealand are about to be taken over by dogs. Lots and lots of dogs.

The aptly named ‘Big Dog Walk with Lots of Dogs’ is only in its second year, but already has a loyal following of canine lovers.

At 10am on April 22, Wellington, Auckland, Napier and Hamilton will host a free, synchronised dog walk for dog owners, lovers, and those who just want to stare, gawk and make cooing sounds.

Sustainable Kiwi businesses are sponsoring the events and offering dog treats to the more than 40,000 people and pets set to attend.

Kiwi comedian Alice Brine launched the event last year, to promote her show at the comedy festival. But it quickly took on a life of its own.

‘‘I needed more publicity so I made a social media stunt and I thought 150 people would turn up and I would hand out flyers. But then it blew up and was major, so I just went with it,’’ she said.

Brine has taken a step back from organising all four walks this year and has brought onboard marketing and event manager Alice McKinley and Bailey McCormack.

McKinley and McCormack have worked on the event in their spare time before and after work, on lunch breaks, and on the weekend.

‘‘It’s taken a lot of time and effort. In order for it to be as relaxed as it is we’ve been working really hard a ridiculous amount of hours - at least 200 since January,’’ McKinley said.

Garage Project’s Mashbone dog treats, made from post-brew spent mash, is sponsoring Wellington and Hamilton.

Omega Plus dog treats is sponsoring Auckland and Napier and The Hits will provide music.

Keep an eye on the event’s Facebook page for details, maps and postponement dates if the weather goes to the dogs.
