Hot, steamy and simply magical

-

Where/what is it?

Onsen Hot Pools overlook the Shotover River. As you make your way down the stairs and into the spa area, you are greeted with a candlelit hot tub sprinkled with autumn stardust, treats and champagne. Time to switch off and relax.

As the name suggests, Onsen Hot Pools are hot and steamy – simply magical on cold, snowy days and winter evenings. When it rains, the pools offer a warm sanctuary, yet when the sun shines they come into their own again, providing cool and shady shelter. Whether on a romantic honeymoon or with your family or friends, Onsen Hot Pools are not to be missed.

A candlelit pool is located high on a cliffside overlooking the magnificent Shotover River canyon, providing views over breathtaking alpine scenery and the perfect vantage point to watch the Shotover Jet jetboats on the river below.

Why go?

If hot pools and breathtaking scenery are your thing, this is a Queenstown must-do. It’s tough to beat a soak after a day on the slopes, biking or walking the Queenstown trails.

At Onsen they have thought of everything from controlling your own spa temperature or indoor-outdoor flow. Retractable picture windows add another dimension, allowing users to convert their pool room from indoors to outdoors. If you have a temperature preference, let them know when you book and your pool will be just right when you arrive. If you find yourself overheating, add cold water to your pool with the push of a button.

Insider tip

Plan and book ahead, before your trip to Queenstown. These pools are extremely popular. If you fancy a family adventure to Onsen, children over 5 years old are welcome up until 5pm.

If you are heading the other direction from Onsen be sure to check out the Shotover Jet. There is a viewing area not to be missed which allows you to the jet boats hoon up and down the canyons.
