- ANUJA NADKARNI

Kiwi corporates are stepping up their social responsibility by encouraging employees to use electric cars on work trips.

The electric day pass lets frequent aeroplane passengers travelling between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch during the week, to book a free electric Volkswagon e-Golf for their visit.

The programme was launched earlier this year in conjunction with Volkswagon, Europcar rentals and the three cities’ airports.

More than 100 corporates have signed up to the programme including AMP, Air New Zealand and Icebreaker.

Zealand Blair Vernon, said the company was looking to convert its fleet to electric vehicles.

He said the day pass was a good way to normalise the electric driving experience.

Stephen Jones, general manager of Europcar NZ said the programme was developed to acknowledge the future of motoring lies in sustainable options.

‘‘People are increasing aware of their carbon footprint and are taking the proactive approach to reducing it...this was a natural step as we evolve with the market and develop green friendly motoring solutions,’’ Jones said.

There are two electric cars available at the Europcar stations at each of the airports.

The e-Golf was built alongside its petrol and diesel counterparts with a driving range of about 150km, expected to increase to 230km in later models introduced towards the end of the year.

The all electric Volkswagon car is expected to be on sale in New Zealand next year.

The cars can be charged in public charging stations or at homes or hotels in an ordinary plug socket.
