Learn to surf just in time for summer

Stephen Heard heads to the beach and finds a new favourite pastime.

few seconds, the feeling was like nothing else. And just like that, I was addicted, seeking another taste until my two-hour board hireage came to an end. I got it, a few times, but the appetite lingers.

Why you should try it

One mildly successful wave and the religion-like fascination with surfing makes a lot of sense. The process is highly addictive and is one that will leave you tripping over water for another turn. It’s a reasonably physical activity and your arms will thank you for it later – whether that be from paddling in or carrying your monstrosity of a beginner’s board.

Plus you’ll enjoy the benefits that come with being outdoors and may tap into a higher state of consciousness along the way.

Risk rating

You should always keep your wits about you around water, particularly at recognised surf beaches where rip tides and strong currents can be unpredictable and dangerous. Check your surf report before heading out and if the conditions sit outside your skill/comfort level, leave it to the experts. Inherent risks include what lies beneath, sun exposure, board-tobody impact and wipeouts.
