Kilowatt Kid super in final

- NZ HARNESS

Invercargill trainer Alister Black and Branxholme brothers Ian and Lindsay Thomson enjoyed their biggest success to date when Kilowatt Kid won the $20,000 Southland Super Nugget Final at Ascot Park yesterday.

The Thomsons also own Nugget starter Lawrence, along with Six Diamonds and Chilli Franco, who account for all of Black’s seven wins this season.

Others raced by the pair from the stable include Ossessione (five wins), The Jinja Ninja (four), Pulling The Strings (three) and Abraham Jones (two).

Kilowatt Kid ($15) is an American Ideal gelding from Wave Runner, the dam also of last season’s Southland Oaks winner Bonnie Joan and Break Dance, who won the Southern Belle Final at Winton in April.

Kilowatt Kid was a $24,000 purchase at the Premier Sales, while Lawrence, a winner twice this season, cost $20,000.

Kilowatt Kid was second to The Bus in a Nugget Final back in October, in what was just his second race, and yesterday’s win was his third in eight races.

As a winner of six races and $44,000 this season, The Bus appeared to have a significant class edge and he had every chance, after working to an early lead.

The Bus sprinted home in 27.2sec for Sam Ottley, but Kilowatt Kid, driven by leading reinsman Blair Orange, beat him on his merits after working up three-wide in the open over the last 800m.

Lawrence faded to sixth in the run home after making an earlier move to sit parked.

Kilowatt Kid was having his first race for six weeks after Black had given him 10 days off.

‘‘He’d raced below par so I gave him a freshenup and he’s obviously come up much better.’’
