Christel Yardley finds Queenstown’s Millbrook Resort is the ideal place to relax and rejuvenate.

-

Milbrook Resort really is an escape from the busy elements, from the challenges of daily life and the feeling many of us have of being on a constant treadmill.

The location

Creating a resort nestled between Queenstown and the historic goldmining village of Arrowtown was pure genius. This is every traveller’s sanctuary. The team at Millbrook have thought of it all. You are surrounded by nature, with stunning views at every turn – the Remarkables, dusted in snow; Coronet Peak (a skip and a jump behind the resort); and Cardrona skifield lies just over the Crown Range. Yes, Millbrook has been designed to blend in harmoniously with its natural surroundings.

The space

Groomed edges and pristine landscapes. Tranquility settles in as you make your way up the main drive, through the avenue of trees and to reception. On arrival, the concierge team ensures a smooth transition from check-in to relaxation mode.

Millbrook is a resort for everyone, whether you are on your honeymoon, on a family break away, or simply in the area to ski the slopes.

The resort’s welcoming vibe quickly has you feeling at home. Guests can enjoy a buffet breakfast at The Clubhouse before tackling the slopes or enjoying a round of golf on the Millbrook courses.

Check out the Hole In One Cafe for lunch before indulging in a treatment at the resort’s day spa or work off that lunch with some laps in the pool.

The resort is a collection of luxury suites nestled in glorious surroundings.

The room

Our Deluxe Studio villa is open plan, with a fireplace in the living room and an inviting spa bath in the en suite bathroom, and boasts expansive views of the golf course.

The generous kitchen includes a mini bar, but we were so well looked after by Millbrook’s restaurants that there was no need to use it.

Comfort factor

With a luxurious soak in the tub, complete with bubbles, bath salts and a glass of Champagne, relaxation was guaranteed. Simply looking out to the Remarkables from the patio or living room would be enough to soothe the most frazzled nerves.

Worth stepping out for

Millbrook is close to Arrowtown – rich in gold mining history, it’s a charming and fascinating place to visit – and Queenstown.

There are several day walks and mountain-bike tracks on your doorstep. If you wish to explore a little further, a day trip to Wanaka over the Crown Range is another must-do.

The verdict

We didn’t want our stay at Millbrook to end. I could have happily spent a week or more lapping up the Millbrook atmosphere, the comforts of our room, and taking in more of Central Otago’s spectacular scenery. Factor in the resort’s other amenities, mixed with the solitude, privacy and freedom, and you have the perfect recipe for bone-deep relaxation immersed in pure luxury. Be sure to check out the hot tub, which is nestled outside near a flowing waterfall.

Even the changing rooms at the day spa are relaxing and comfortable. This resort is next level when it comes to luxury, no doubt a key reason why it has won so many awards.

Highlight

The views and rolling countryside are made for romantic evenings. Before hitting the golf course or spending the day on the slopes, fuel up with a nourishing breakfast at the Clubhouse. Dine on the patio overlooking the green, or indoors beside the fireplace. The buffet offers everything from fresh muesli, fruit, yoghurt, as well as hash browns, mushrooms, tomatoes, eggs, sausages, and fresh bread and hand-made pastries. Create your own juice using the freestanding juicer and a range of fruit and vegetables, or finish off with an espresso from the bar.

Lowlight

Checking out of Millbrook. We could have stayed forever.

Getting there

Once booked, you will receive clear directions from the reservation team, with the option of arriving by helicopter, car or complimentary airport pickup. Deluxe studio rooms start from $265 a night.
