Lucky Amy becomes a Killer

- GLENN MCCONNELL

As she walked on stage, 15-yearold Amy Claire was ‘‘blacking out’’ from shock. The Christchurch student had been plucked from the crowd to play drums with The Killers. And, she rocked it.

It’s become a tradition for the Las Vegas rock band to pick someone to come on stage to play For Reasons Unknown, and so, while she queued outside Auckland’s Spark Arena on Friday, Claire thought she’d give it a go.

All she had was a Subway bag. ‘‘So, I wrote ‘drums?’ on the back,’’ the Killers superfan said yesterday.

The band spotted the makeshift sign and she was lifted from the mosh pit, and found herself having a conversation with heartthrob lead singer Brandon Flowers.

‘‘I like nearly passed out on the way up to the stage. I started blacking out. I was just really in shock... I was like is this real?’’

On stage, she didn’t let the nerves ruin her performance. Despite having played the song just once before, she amazed thousands in the arena, many of whom went straight to social media to talents.

The year 12 student had been learning the drums for about seven years, she said, but at school she could only ever play jazz.

"It was absolutely insane to play with the band and do what I love with them, there,’’ she said yesterday, while lined up in Wellington for The Killer’s second New Zealand show.

The 15-year-old flew to Wellington at 7am yesterday for the second show and will be in the crowd again on Tuesday in her hometown of Christchurch. praised her
