Words for road trips

One of the more notable podcast series of the year is The Teacher’s Pet from The Australian newspaper. The pod is presented and investigated by award-winning reporter Hedley Thomas and looks at the disappearance of Lynette Dawson in Sydney, 37 years ago.

Lynette was married to star rugby player tuned teacher Chris Dawson, who had an affair with a student.

Each episode is dense and comprehensive, highlighting flaws in the police case.

There are 16 episodes, but stay with this one because Thomas’ reporting will blow you away.

In a stunning development on December 5, Chris Dawson was arrested and charged with Lyn’s murder.

Another powerful series to binge on while you drive is Slow Burn from Slate. Series one is a re-examination of the Watergate scandal, and will challenge what you think you know about the Nixon presidency.

The team follows up Watergate with series two on the Bill Clinton impeachment of 1998. The pod showcases the people who tried to bring the Clintons down (many of whom you’ll recognise) and paints a deplorable picture of Bill and his enemies.

And for a bit of fun try Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me! ,a raucous, interactive show that mixes current events with gameshow-style trivia.

The show is recorded in front of a live audience, and features a rotating panel of commentators and listeners who take on the role of contestants. If you’re looking for a car-friendly game, Wait Wait is a perfect way to liven up a long haul.
