Keep the kids entertained

- Katy Atkin katy.atkin@stuff.co.nz

If you’re travelling or just looking for an alternative to TV on a rainy day, there are some great podcasts for children around that are also easy on grown-up ears.

My favourite kids’ podcast is science based, and hosted by grown-up radio reporter Molly Bloom.

Brains On! looks at everything from robots, dinosaurs, the science of Frankenstein, how paint sticks to walls, and how animals breathe underwater.

Each episode is between 30- to 45 minutes, so it’s perfect for road trips and there is a lot of variety. (I’m not even going to pretend that I didn’t want to understand the science behind farts).

For the littlest passengers, Story Time is great in the car. It’s the perfect change up from playing I Spy, and features children’s bedtime stories aimed at toddlers through to 12 year olds.

Expect traditional stories as well as original, more modern stories featuring animals, and children dealing with real life situations.

There’s also a handy age rating on each episode if you want to check how appropriate it is for your children.

If you fancy a sing-a-long, Ear Snacks is a musical podcast for kids about the world around us. Presented by upbeat duo Andrew and Polly, it’s great for kids with big imaginations who like to learn – so basically all kids!

There’s usually a special guest and a sing-a-long around the topic.

Each episode is less than 20 minutes, so it’s perfect for those ‘‘Are we there yet?’’ moments in the car.
