Playlists to make you sing

- Music Kate Robertson kate.robertson@stuff.co.nz

If podcasts are the new blogs, curated playlists are the new mix tapes. Having the resources to be our own master curators is one of modern technology’s greatest gifts. Sure, the album format is suffering a painful death by playlists, but the ability to click and drag whatever songs you fancy into wittily titled selections is an absolute joy.

That being said, it’s hard to find well-curated playlists when you’re sick of your own taste in music. If you want the goods from some proper music nerds, the three below are worthy of your time.

R&B singer Kehlani launched her Apple Music radio show Sunday Gems late last year. She has only made three episodes so far, but their content and accompanying playlists are solid.

Each playlist is tied to a theme, made up of carefully selected, slightly alternative songs. The Depression playlist soothes, Navigation is a guiding light, and her New Year compilation will get any party started. Listen on: Apple Music.

Meanwhile, Elton John doesn’t care for the classics because he’s too busy putting his energy into new music and fresh talent.

It’s for this reason his regularly updated Rocket Hour playlist is a treasure trove.

I owe him a lot for introducing me to Theophilus London and Trampolene, and for letting us in on what excites him musically. Listen on Apple Music.

Finally, author, podcast host and columnist Dolly Alderton is music obsessed. While she fronts a millennial-slanted podcast, her taste in music is anything but. Dolly Mix Tapes are regular playlists of songs she loves.

Expect to hear Ray Charles and Miles Davis, Lily Allen, and Chris Stapleton. Listen on: Spotify.
