Embrace Womad sounds

If that all sounds too hard, Womad has its own Spotify account with full festival playlists.

If you’re reading this column, my guess is you’re not at Womad. If you’re reading this and you are in New Plymouth enjoying New Zealand’s best three-day fest, I’ll allow you three seconds to indulge in your own smugness.

For those wondering Wo-what? Womad is ‘‘the World Music Festival’’. It aims to ‘‘excite, to inform, and to create awareness of the worth and potential of a multicultural society’’ and, since it was established, has held events in 27 countries.

It’s wholesome, familyfriendly fun, and consistently pulls big-name headliners.

If, like me, you’re parked up on the couch right now, pop on some 2019 Womad artists and book your leave for next year’s festivities.

Benin-born singer, songwriter and activist Angelique Kidjo brings pure joy to any stage she graces.

She’s collaborated with everyone from Questlove to Josh Groban, and boasts a 16-album catalogue.

Her most recent album is a re-interpretation of Talking Heads’ Remain in Light.

Kidjo heard the African-influence the first time she listened. Decades later, she’s properly cemented it in Afrobeat and African culture. Listen to both versions side by side for a particularly nerdy and satisfying experience.

Kiwi collective Congress of Animals released their selftitled album in December.

Each of the group’s members – Nigel Collins, Justin Firefly Clarke, Age Pryor, and Ben Lemi – have contributed songs to the record, so each band member has a moment in the sun.

The album spans genres, and is a complete Aotearoa all stars lineup, showcasing some of our finest musical talent.

If that all sounds too hard, Womad has its own Spotify account with full festival playlists.

Search ‘‘Womad New Zealand’’ and you will be greeted by not one, not two, not three, but four playlists to immerse you in the rich, diverse festival.
