Let’s back our own backyard
First it was China, then South Korea and Iran. Italy followed soon after. And Spain. Then our Government announced the mandatory 14-day self-isolation rule for everyone coming into New Zealand. Every day we wake up to another country scratched off our travel maps.
The effects of the coronavirus pandemic have been felt worldwide, across all industries, but probably none more so than the travel industry.
Airlines have cancelled routes, cruise companies have postponed sailings, countries have closed their borders and, in some cases, it’s even resulted in job losses.
It’s definitely an unprecedented time in the travel industry and we’re in uncharted waters at the moment.
But we have an opportunity here.
We have an opportunity to back small, local businesses and tourism boards, and people who make New Zealand great and really need our support right now. Back Your Backyard is a Stuff and Sunday Star-Times project that aims to show Kiwis that we don’t need to travel far to have some unique experiences.
Maybe your British OE has been disrupted, or your Europe river cruise has been postponed but, for now, while we’re all here, let’s make the most of it.
We’ve tapped all the reporters in our newsrooms across the country, all of our travel freelance journalists, and the Stuff Travel team to show you why your backyard is worth hanging out in.
You’ll see that staying put in Aotearoa can make for great experiences, encounters and memories.
Travel advice and conditions can change quickly, especially in the current Covid-19 environment, but we’ll keep an eye on that, too.
For now, sit back and let us show you your next adventure, and join us in backing our backyard.
